Adult Education Association.

The Adult Education Association of the U.S.A. (AEA-USA) was formed in 1951 by the merger of the American Association for Adult Education (supported by the Carnegie Foundation) and the Department of Adult Education of the National Education Association. In 1982, the AEA-USA combined with the National Association of Public School Adult Educators (NAPSAE) to become the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education (AAACE). The collection contains material from both organizations.

American Book Company.

The American Book Company was formed in 1890 by consolidation of Van Antwerp, Bragg and Co., A.S. Barnes and Co., D. Appleton and Co., and Iveson, Blakeman and Co. The collection includes the records of the company which manufactured books and educational materials in several locations in the United States, with head offices in New York City; the book list embraced all subjects at all educational levels. The collection is primarily textbooks, including several editions as far back as 1840 of the McGuffey readers; also included are business records and illustrations.

American Locomotive Company.

The American Locomotive Company was incorporated in 1901, the result of the merger of the Schenectady Locomotive Engine Manufactory with seven small companies. In 1955 it became Alco Products, Inc. and was acquired in 1964 by the Worthington Corporation. In addition to steam and diesel engines and generators, the American Locomotive Company also manufactured high quality steel and military tanks, with unsuccessful ventures in automobile manufacture (1905-1913) and the production of nuclear energy (1954-1962). Collection contains advertising and publicity, correspondence, financial records (annual reports, ledgers, etc.), technical drawings and technical manuals, maps, news clippings, personnel records, photographs, sketches and drawings, and more.

Commission of Professors of Adult Education

Organizational records (correspondence, financial papers, legal papers, documentation of conferences and other meetings, membership files, reports, task force and committee papers, and printed material) of the Commission of Professors of Adult Education. Correspondents whose letters are of greatest depth and duration include Robert A. Carlson, Mary Jane Even, William Griffith, Cyril Orvin Houle, Roy John Ingham, Malcolm Shepherd Knowles, Alan Boyd Knox, Howard McClusky, Wayne Schroeder and Wilson B. Thiede. Also present are subject files for organizations including the Adult Education Association, the American Association for Adult and Continuing Education, the Association of University Evening Colleges, the Center for the Study of Liberal Education for Adults, the National Association for Public and Continuing Education, and the National University Extension Association. There are also general and regional printed materials as well as some audio-visual materials (film, slides, and tape recordings).

Records and papers of the adult education and literacy organization. Collection includes conference planning and programs, minutes, published material, newsletters, membership directories, policies and procedures, bylaws, treasurer's reports, strategic planning files, historian reports, more.

Costa, Joseph.

Papers of the American photographer, founder of the National Press Photographers Association, executive editor of the National press photographer. Died 1988. Most of the material relates to the National Press Photographers Association, including minutes, financial and other administrative records; a run of the National press photographer (1956-1967); photographs of various subjects, including some of Costa's work (Eastman Kodak Company, Famous Photographers School, King Features Syndicate, Trans World Airlines); family photographs; and writings by and about Costa. Approximately 9 linear feet of material pertains to the camera-in-the-courtroom controversy. Correspondence includes that of National Press Photographers Association officers John W. Ahlhauser, James Bennet, Morris S. Berman, Joseph Costa, John Faber, and Arthur Witman; and organizations including American Judicature Society, American Medical Association, American Newspaper Publishers Association, American Press Institute, American Red Cross, American Society of Magazine Photographers, American Society of Newspaper Editors, American Standards Association, Associated Press, Cigar Institute of America, Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc., and Eastman Kodak Company.

Douglass, Truman Bartlett.

Papers of the American Congregational clergyman (1901-1969) concerned with urban ministry, civil rights, and Christian unity. Collection includes correspondence; sermons; records of the Board of Home Missions of the Congregational and Christian churches, later the United Church Board for Homeland Ministries (1936-1969), and the Consultation on Church Union (1962-1969); memorabilia, including awards, clippings, photographs, and the Douglass-Bartlett family genealogy; and writings.

Egbert, Perry T.

American engineer, worked for American Locomotive Company (ALCo). Correspondence, technical reports and drawings, cost information, etc., most of which relates to ALCo and its production of diesel engines.

E.P. Dutton (Firm)

American publishing firm, founded 1852. Papers include those of founder Edward P. Dutton, John Macrae, and the company's business records, inclucing correspondence, letter books, photographs, clippings, publishers' catalogs, authors' scrapbooks, general files, legal files, financial material, production records, and publicity files.

Huntington, Anna Hyatt, 1876-1973

Papers of the American sculptor, specializing in equestrian figures and animals. Correspondence, 1887-1965; diaries, 1925-1958; articles; exhibition catalogs; financial and legal material; manuscripts; and photographs.

Institutes of Religion and Health.

The Institutes of Religion and Health was formed by the merger of the Academy of Religion and Mental Health, and the American Foundation of Religion and Psychiatry, with its Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute. The merger combined the resources of two long established and widely known interfaith, interracial, interdisciplinary, nonprofit, tax-exempt agencies serving human health and well-being. Collection comprises organizational records including general files, correspondence, financial records (balance sheets, budgets), and printed material (annual reports, bulletins, newsletters).

Knowles, Malcolm S. (Malcolm Shepherd), 1913-1997.

Contains Knowles's personal and professional papers: biographical data, correspondence, photographs, printed and published material, scrapbooks, speeches, meeting and workshop documentation, cassette and video tapes, films, and graphics. Includes papers generated by Knowles as professor (Boston University and North Carolina State University); as member of a number of adult education organizations; as educator (workshops and seminars); and as consultant to various organizations.

Mann, Marty, 1904-

Papers of the American advertising and public relations executive. Ms. Mann founded the National Council on Alcoholism in 1944, and served as its executive director until 1968. Collection includes correspondence (1944-1964); desk calendars (1946-1965); scrapbooks (1944-1962); manuscripts (1944-1948); speeches; and files of the National Council on Alcoholism, including executive minutes (1957-1965), board minutes (1954-1965), documentation on conferences and programs; and other organizational records.
